Profile

Software leader with over 18 years of experience scaling and leading product development teams at companies large and small. My technical experience spans software architecture, performance, scaling, data science (graph analytics, NLP), and product management. I’m passionate about building great teams and driving innovation through software.

Experience

BNY Mellon Innovation Center – Research and development office for Bank of New York Mellon

Manager, Cloud Platform

Nov 2015 – Present

  • Managed a team of software developers and led the design, implementation, and delivery of several cloud platform services within the Bank
  • Developed a RESTful “database as a service” API for the cloud platform. Created a custom query grammar to decouple the storage engine from the API and allow for extensions such as sequences, native datetime objects, and field projections on aggregates.
  • Created a logging service for the cloud platform using a combination of open source and custom software. Developed extensions for access security, LDAP integration, secure API access, and multi-user support within Kibana.
  • Developed a service broker for managing and deploying new services within the cloud. This standardized how new services would get developed, deployed, and managed within the cloud.
  • Integrated Cloud Foundry as a deployment target for cloud platform

Quid – Semantic search product that visualizes the concepts, topics, and trends within a corpus of documents

VP of Engineering

Sept 2012 – May 2015

  • Bootstrapped the engineering team and software development processes at Quid. Hired more than 20 engineers while growing the team to over 30 by the end of 2014
  • Developed roadmap and drove migration from a native desktop application to a web based SaaS platform leveraging HTML5 and WebGL. The GA release of the new platform was in July of 2013, where Quid onboarded its first software only customers
  • Drove several major releases, such as the inclusion of news (1.5M articles/day), blogs (200K bloggers), world wide patents, and the initial Twitter prototype
  • Consolidated the technology stack and drove efforts to stabilize backend processing while improving scale and performance
  • Developed a recruiting and interview process (including an ATS with metrics) while staffing the following roles: Backend/Frontend software development, Data Science, DevOps, Test Automation (SDET), Design/UX, and Product Management

Greenplum – MPP SQL database designed to store and process petabytes of information (acquired by EMC, July 2010)

Director of R&D

Jun 2008 – Sept 2012

  • Initially brought in to create a database appliance and develop a kernel performance team. Started with 2 engineers and grew to 18 (appliance software, kernel performance, database management and monitoring)
  • Hands on contributor, developing initial appliance software stack as well as working on the code and architecture of the database management and monitoring suite
  • Shipped over 300 v1 appliances and ramped up to ship hundreds of the v2 appliances (software built, hardware designed but left the company before GA)
  • First team within company to move to an agile development methodology. Successfully shipped 6 major releases with quarterly service packs (and one-off patches) in-between each major release
  • Created a web based management suite for the Greenplum database and Appliance product lines

Yahoo! – Internet media company focused on creating personalized digital experiences and connecting users to content

Systems Architect, Site Reliability

Jul 2004 – Jun 2008

  • Started as the sole contributor for database applications on the Site Reliability team. Eventually hired 5 other engineers to scale out the function within the company
  • Embedded within other teams such as Yahoo Mail, Personals, Answers, and Advertising to build scalable and fault tolerant data processing systems that leveraged distributed systems (moving away from the legacy SMP based architectures)
  • Developed libraries for interfacing with Oracle’s OCI/OCCI interfaces to simplify and standardize application development
  • Created tools to assist with monitoring and managing Oracle, MySQL, and SQLite databases
  • Developed best practices when building new systems and then applied across other properties within the company. Examples include building a petabyte size warehouse using Hadoop for ETL pre-processing, an email attachment de-duplication system (saving 5+ PB of storage), and developing the next generation advertising systems for flexibility, scale, and performance.
  • Worked closely with the platform team to move away from proprietary hardware/software solutions and move toward commodity and open source options. Spent significant time evaluating and understanding I/O elevators, TLB impact on various workloads, NUMA memory (AMD 64 bit), and Ethernet link aggregation. At Yahoo’s scale, this work resulted in significant reductions in latency and increases in performance/efficiency

Oracle – Enterprise database and applications company

Principal Consultant, System Performance Group (SPG)

Jun 1999 – Jul 2004

  • Member of a specialized team, focused on building large scale application for the Oracle database and working with kernel developers on scalability issues, mostly around caching, mutexes, locks, and cache coherency.
  • Developed applications at customer sites that pushed the limits of the database. Also worked with the Oracle applications team on fixing internal applications.
  • Prototyped and fixed modules within Oracle’s Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable product line to allow them to scale to the level needed at Oracle’s largest user (Health and Human Services, Medicare/Medicaid)
  • Developed and maintained toolkit for Oracle Consulting to manage and tune batch processing queues within the Oracle Applications Suite. Also maintained a toolkit for monitoring and troubleshooting low level database resources (file buffers, network buffers, latches, locks)
  • Managed teams of engineers on customer implementations at EMC and Health and Human Services (HHS)

USF Information & Decision Support Systems – Developed and maintain all student information systems

Member of Technical Staff

Nov 1997 – June 1999

  • As my first development job, I had to teach myself SQL, Oracle Forms, and database fundamentals for application development. All of my prior experience was in C, Pascal, and x86 Assembler
  • Implemented and rolled out USF's first web based registration. Prior to this, registration was via the phone or in person with a scantron form and a #2 pencil! This system had to support over 40,000 students
  • Developed first real time class schedule search that involved significant SQL tuning. Prior to this, class schedules were updated 4 times per day and almost always out of date for students trying to find open classes.
  • Worked with finance department to develop custom forms for financial aid processing as well as C based Unix daemon to do batch processing of payments
  • Worked with Registrar's Office to develop and customize web based modules for registration, schedule lookup, and grades processing
